Entscheiderfabrik 2010, final presentations of the 5 IT key topics within the German Hospital Conference at the Medica

At the Medica’s German Hospital Conference 2010, the team of MEDNOVO with the project called ”IT meets medical engineering - process optimisation in medical documentation” presented its results. Together with the cooperating hospital and the healthcare consultant, MEDNOVO worked on the topic “process optimisation in medical documentation” in order to develop solutions. After the initial analysis, mapping the processes and introducing the electronic requirements management at the cooperating hospital results could finally be presented. In cooperation with all parties involved, MEDNOVO was able to point out the savings potential resulting from the integration of IT and medical engineering.

The project based on the installation of a medical documentation system (MDS) and the introduction of the electronic requirements management at the cooperating hospital by MEDNOVO. Evaluation criteria and questionnaires for the “before and after comparison” were developed together with the chief physicians of the departments involved.

After a final evaluation, an optimisation of the diagnostic treatment process could be proved, in consequence of avoiding repeated examinations, providing complete treatment documentation as well as simplified importation of patient data and a faster access to previous findings.

Further advantages are permanent availability of findings on the one hand, and the complete recording and invoicing of performed services and diagnostics on the other. Apart from that, significance of findings could be increased considerably by the data integration of modalities (images / measured values).

In terms of figures, a cost saving of annually € 23,000 results from the complete integrations of three endoscopic devices and about 6 500 examinations. This comparison includes the preparation of examinations, the scheduling, the preparations of the devices (with and without worklist) as well as avoiding the printout of images and phone calls with the assigning and requesting physicians.

Further advantages in efficiency, such as reducing the length of stay by eliminating shortages of examinations, using the devices more efficiently by avoiding idle times and reducing costs of writing discharge letters, are not even included yet,

But the project is still a working process. In 2011, the integration of further departments is planned. As part of the “process optimisation in medical documentation” project, there also will be a “before and after analysis” for those departments.
